MUI WO is on the eastern side of LANTAU ISLAND and can be reached by ferry from CENTRAL PIER No6 also by bus from hong kong going via TUNG CHUNG then onto MUI WO.
MUI WO has some history being linked to the SOUTHERN SONG DYNASTY also silver was produced from the silver mines along the silver river during the second half of the 19 century.one silver mine remains but unfortunately it is sealed for safety reasons.
The name silver name now appears to the naming of the local area such as SILVER MINE BAY,SILVER MINE BEACH and the ferry terminal is named SILVER MINE FERRY TERMINAL.
On reaching MUI WO to exit the ferry terminal and into the bus terminal area and taxi rank.
the Lantau bus company operates a number of buses to different location within the island ,they are as follows,
1 to TAI O
2 to NGONG PING (BUDDHA)
3 to TUNG CHUNG
4 to TONG FUK
All these vehicles are single decker coaches with air conditioning and all run on a fairly good time table.There are two more buses that run to airport (CHEP LAP KOK) A35 But this service only runs 5 inward and 5 outward journey per day.Plus the N35 is a night vehicle running only 2 inward and 2 outward,Times of these buses and all bus routes can be obtained from NEW LANTAU BUS COMPANY.
MUI WO has a good number of shops ranging from store(food),electrical to gift shops plus a lot more besides,and of course MUI WO has a McDONALD.there are also many estate agents offering lease or purchase within the Lantau area. Plus there are restaurants and cafes in the town and on the way to Silvermine beach.Within the district of MUI WO there are large map boards detailing local places of interest and of course directions to to each of these locations.
Walking north to the beach area you travel along a tree lined sidewalk along the sea shore passing a number of gift shops and restaurants .On reaching the beach you will pass the SILVERMINE HOTEL that serves a good selection of foods.
The beach is large ,uncrowded and safe with lift guards on duty.The facilities are first class with toilets,changing rooms and shower block for male and female.within the beach area there are B,Q areas and a large children's play area,swings,slides and climbing frames.
Wandering from the beach area you enter MUI WO old town which has to offer an indoor food and vegetables market (known as KAU TSUEN) a library and swimming pool,there is also the government building which also houses the post office and clinics
There are places of interest like SILVERMINE WATER FALL (but only after rain) which has a picnic area and B,Q area.then there is HUNG SHING temple and CHUNG HAU OLD mansion plus SILVER MINE (blocked).MUI WO is also the stating point and finishing point of the LANTAU trails,but other trails lead from MUI WO to DISCOVERY BAY ,on reaching the summit you can go by the coastal route leading past TRAPPIST HAVEN monastery to NIM SHUE WAN or going by DISCOVERY BAY golf club which gives a birds eye view of DISCOVERY BAY.MUI WO is surrounded by sea one side and mountains on the other,LIN FA SHAN is 700m high.MUI WO is a a buslig town with lots to do and is well worth a visit.
